Description
Mount Prickle Mine Cottage is a small house dating from the 18th century. It features painted killas rubble and cob walls, wooden lintels, and slate sills. The cottage has a steep corrugated iron roof, which was formerly thatched, and brick chimneys located over the gable ends. The right-hand chimney is positioned over a large external tapered rubble breast.
The original layout consists of two rooms flanking a through passage, with a small larder or fuel store attached to the rear of the right-hand room, which is under an integral outshut. The partition to the right of the passage has been removed, creating a larger room, although it may not have existed originally. Additionally, a further service room was added to the rear of the left-hand room in the late 19th or early 20th century, covered by a low-pitched lean-to roof.
The cottage is two storeys high, with the first floor partly in the roof space. The nearly symmetrical southeast front has two windows, with the first-floor windows positioned closer together. There is a central doorway featuring a four-panel door that has been later glazed in the top panels. A deep lean-to open-fronted porch has very thick, unpierced rubble side walls. The window openings are small and contain late 19th-century four-pane two-light casements.
Inside, the cottage remains largely unaltered, preserving original floors, roof structure, pine muntin and plank partitions, window seats, a simple stair, and a large partly blocked hearth in the right-hand room. This cottage is a rare survival in the area, representing a small 18th-century house that has seen little alteration since the 19th century.
