Description
The milestone located approximately 60 meters east of the roundabout on Tresawls Road dates from around 1754 and is made of stone. It has a rectangular shape, stands about 0.94 meters tall, and features a segmental-arched top. The stone is painted white and inscribed with the words "FROM / TRURO / 2 / MILES" in black sans serif capitals.
In the mid-18th century, turnpike trusts were encouraged to install markers like milestones along the roads they managed. The Truro Turnpike Trust, established by Act of Parliament in 1754, was the first in Cornwall, and this milestone is situated on the former turnpike road connecting Truro to Chacewater and Redruth, one of the six routes mentioned in the 1754 Act. Although the modern route diverges north of the original path at Threemilestone, the original turnpike ran through Chacewater and Scorrier to Redruth. The milestone is marked in its current location on the first edition Ordnance Survey map from 1880. Records from the Truro Turnpike Minute Book in 1825 indicate that milestones along this route were regularly maintained, suggesting that the current lettering may have been refreshed in the early 19th century.
This milestone is designated for its intact condition, as it remains in its original position since 1754, and it has group value with other listed milestones along this turnpike route. It also holds historical significance as a testament to the significant road improvements made during the 18th century by Turnpike Trusts.
