Description

New Mill Cottage is a pair of houses, now combined into a single dwelling, dating from the late 18th century. The building is constructed of painted killas rubble with oak lintels and slate sills. The roof is steeply pitched and covered in corrugated asbestos; it likely had a thatched covering originally. A brick chimney stands over the left gable end, and a 20th-century stone chimney is on the right.

Originally, the cottages were identical, each with a single room, and entrances and stairs positioned centrally. They are now a two-room house with a 20th-century extension to the rear. The south front has a regular two-window arrangement. It retains original wide three-light casement windows with eight panes of glass in each light, many of which are crown glass. Doorways were grouped in the middle; the right-hand doorway has been blocked, while the left-hand doorway has a door that may be original.

Inside, the interior is simple. A fragment of moulded chair rail is visible to the right of the entrance, and the right-hand room has ovolo-moulded ceiling beams. The first floor and roof were not inspected. The original windows are an important feature of the cottage.
