Description

The milestone, located approximately 8 meters from the east wall of Kenwyn Nursing Home, dates from around 1754 and is made of stone. It has a rectangular shape, stands about 0.94 meters high, and features a segmental-arched top. The milestone is painted white, with the inscription "FROM / TRURO / 1 / MILE" in black sans serif capitals. Below the lettering on the front face, there is an incised benchmark.

Historically, from the mid-18th century, turnpike trusts were encouraged to install markers like milestones along the roads they managed. The Truro Turnpike Trust, established by Act of Parliament in 1754, oversaw this milestone, which is situated on the former turnpike road between Truro and Shortlanesend (now the B3284). This route was specifically mentioned in the 1754 Act. The milestone appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map from 1880, and records from the Truro Turnpike Minute Book in 1825 indicate that milestones along this route were regularly maintained, suggesting that the current lettering may have been updated in the early 19th century.

This milestone is designated at Grade II due to its intact condition, original position, group value with other listed milestones along the turnpike route, and its historical significance related to the 18th-century road improvements initiated by Turnpike Trusts.
