Description

This milestone dates from circa 1829 and is constructed of stone. It is rectangular, approximately 0.94 metres high, and has a segmental-arched top, painted white. The front face is inscribed in black sans serif capitals with the words "FROM / TRURO / 1 / MILE". An incised benchmark is positioned below the lettering.

The milestone’s construction reflects the encouragement of turnpike trusts to provide road markers from the mid-18th century onwards, following the establishment of the Truro Turnpike Trust in 1754, which regulated a road extending to Calenick smelting-house and beyond. The route was altered in 1829 to create a less steep climb and accommodate the current line of the A39. The milestone marks the one-mile point on this new route.

The milestone was recorded on the 1880 Ordnance Survey map, though it was originally situated on the opposite side of the road. Later road straightening work in the 1970s created a lay-by, and the milestone was briefly removed before being reinstated on its current location, just across the highway.

The milestone is designated at Grade II for its intactness as an original 1829 marker, its group value in relation to other listed milestones along the turnpike route, and its historic interest as testimony to 18th-century road improvement initiatives.
