Group Of 10 Tombchests 6 Metres To West Of Church Of St Werburgha

This is a group of ten tombchests located 6 metres to the west of the Church of St Werburgha. They date from 1735 to 1826 and are constructed from stone rubble with rectangular slate lids. Among them is the tombchest of Robert Gillard, a yeoman who died in 1735, along with his wife Joan (who died in 1746) and their son Thomas (who died in 1769). This tombchest features a decoration of an angel's head.

Another notable tombchest belongs to Henry Huthnance Gillard, a yeoman who died in 1809, and his wife Margery (who died in 1779), which includes an inscription. There is also the tombchest of Robert, son of Thomas Gillard and his wife Joan (who died in 1794), from Trevilian, which has a well-carved lid adorned with an angel's head and verse.

Additionally, there is the tombchest of Thomas, another son of Thomas Gillard and Joan (who died in 1801), also from Trevilian, featuring a well-carved lid. The tombchest of John Grigg, a yeoman (who died in 1754), includes inscriptions for his wife Elizabeth (who died in 1751) and their son Richard (who died in 1784) along with his wife (who died in 1796).

Other tombchests include those of Elizabeth, wife of Peter Grigg (who died in 1826), Peter Grigg, a yeoman (who died in 1790), and John Grigg, a yeoman from the late 18th century. There are also tombchests for John Ridgeman (who died in 1800) of Tremaine and his wife Mary (who died in 1830), as well as another for John Ridgeman (who died in 1818). The slate lids of these tombchests are inscribed with upper and lower case lettering featuring serifs.
