Description
Youlstone Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the early 17th century, with possible earlier origins. It is constructed of stone rubble and cob, with the front and rear rendered. The hall bay is made of stone rubble and features granite dressings. The exposed left-hand gable end of the higher range on the right is partly slate hung. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with slate, featuring gable ends and a lower range on the left. There is a brick chimney stack at the end of the right side and a stone rubble and brick chimney stack to the left of the center.
The layout of the farmhouse is probably a three-room and through passage plan, built down a slope with the ground rising to the right. The entrance is located to the left of center, with the hall heated by an axial stack that backs onto the passage. The 17th-century hall bay is positioned at the front on the higher right-hand side. An inner room to the right is heated by an end stack. The lower end on the left was converted from a shippon to domestic use in the 1970s or 1980s and is unheated.
The exterior features a two-storey range on the right and a one-storey and loft structure on the left, with roof heights changing in line with the cross wall below the passage. The front is asymmetrical with four windows, and the entrance is to the left of center, with the ground rising to the right. There is a 20th-century entrance porch with a gable end, a 20th-century two-light casement window, and two 19th-century two-light casement windows flanking the two-storey hall bay on the right. The first floor has a 20th-century one-light casement window above the entrance and 19th and 20th-century two-light casement windows flanking the hall bay. The gabled hall bay projection features a granite three-light mullion window on the ground floor and a similar two-light mullion window on the first floor, both with hoodmoulds. A 20th-century glazed extension is present across the left-hand side of the lower end. The interior is not accessible, but the owner states that there is a granite surround to the hall fireplace.
