Description

Downinney Cottage is likely a late 17th-century farmhouse, now a private residence. It is constructed of rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, with a rag slate roof featuring a gable end on the left and a hipped end on the right. A stone rubble end stack is situated on the left-hand side. The original plan consisted of two rooms and a cross or through passage. The room to the left was heated by an end stack, while the heating method for the room to the right is uncertain. A circa 19th-century service outshut extends to the rear on the right side, and a probable 20th-century one-room plan wing is attached to the rear on the left side. The two-storey front is almost symmetrical with two windows. A 20th-century part-glazed door, protected by a slate hood, is positioned near the centre, flanked by 19th- or 20th-century two-light casement windows. Similar windows are located on the first floor above. The interior was not inspected.
