Description

Marine Terrace is a row of eight coastguards' cottages, later converted into private houses, dating from the mid-19th century and situated on Forraby and Dunn Street in Boscastle. The building is constructed of slate stone rubble with a bitumen-coated rag slate roof and has four axial brick stacks. The design is notable for a well-planned arrangement; each cottage features a two-room, double-depth layout. The left-hand end cottage has a third room set back from the main elevation. Three pairs of cottages in the centre share a common entrance, divided into two by narrow, slanting doors likely leading directly into the front room. The two end cottages have side or rear entrances. The cottages are heated by four axial stacks, with each cottage sharing a stack and back-to-back corner fireplaces.

The two-storey terrace exhibits a regular 1:8 window front with segmental dressed stone arches over the ground floor openings. The ground floor includes three entrances, each divided into two by two narrow slanting doors, each incorporating a porthole window. Each entrance is flanked by two 19th-century two-light horizontally sliding sash windows with glazing bars; the far left window has been altered to a two-light casement. The first floor has seven similar windows arranged directly above the ground floor window openings, with the eighth window on the left also changed to a two-light casement. The interior remains uninspected. The terrace has remained largely unaltered and is located near the picturesque harbour at Boscastle.
