Description
Penrowan is a house built in 1887, constructed from slate stone rubble with brick dressings and featuring a slate roof with hipped ends. It has a brick axial stack and is set into the side of a steeply sloping bank, presenting a single-storey elevation to the road and a two-storey elevation on the lower side, with a deep battered base. The design accommodates the challenging site and takes advantage of exceptional views. The entrance, located in the side wall, likely leads directly into a stair hall, with a reception room on the lower side to the right and a service room against the bank on the left.
The house has a regular two-window front elevation on the lower side, characterized by the battered base and brick segmental arches above the openings. There is a single-storey canted bay window on the ground floor featuring three 24-pane sash windows, while the first floor has two 20-pane sash windows. The interior has not been inspected.
Penrowan is part of a group of similar houses that overlook a steep-sided combe leading down to Boscastle Harbour, which includes Valley View, Lewarne, Meachard, Glenfinart, Belmont, and Polqueens.
