Description

The Old Mill is a water mill and millhouse that has been converted into craft shops and a restaurant. The millhouse likely dates from the 18th century, while the mill itself was built around the mid-19th century. The structure is made of slate stone rubble and features rag slate roofs; the millhouse has gable ends, while the mill has a higher roof with hipped ends that extend over an outshot extension.

The millhouse includes a brick stack on the left gable end and a projecting stone rubble stack with a truncated brick shaft at the rear. It is probably a single-depth, two-room layout with a cross passage. The right room is heated by a rear lateral stack, and the left room is heated by a gable end. The mill is located at the right gable end of the millhouse and features an overshot wheel at the rear.

The millhouse is two storeys tall with a basement and has an asymmetrical three-window front, with brick segmental arches above the openings. It has a 20th-century partially glazed door and 19th-century two-light casements on both the ground and first floors. The mill itself is three storeys high, with brick segmental arches above the openings and a mix of 19th and 20th-century windows. Stone rubble steps lead up to the loft on the right side. The mill has a hybrid overshot wheel at the rear, with water carried on an aqueduct and a leat that continues to the back of the millhouse. Most of the interior machinery in the mill has been removed. A photograph of the mill and millhouse taken in 1894 can be found in J. Rendell's book, "North Cornwall in the Old Days," published in 1983 on page 72.
