Description

Valley View is a house built in 1887, with an extension added in the early 20th century. It features slate stone rubble construction with brick dressings and some tile hanging, topped with a slate roof that has hipped ends and brick axial stacks. The house is situated on a steeply sloping bank, presenting a single-storey elevation to the road and a two-storey elevation on the lower side, with a deep battered base.

The design effectively accommodates the challenging site and takes advantage of stunning views. Originally, the house had a single-depth plan with the entrance on the side wall leading into a stair hall. A reception room is located on the lower side to the right, while a service room is positioned against the bank on the left. In the early 20th century, the house was extended at the rear, adding a larger reception room with an octagonal corner turret that overlooks the harbour.

The building is two storeys high, with a window arrangement of 1:2:2, featuring segmental brick arches over the openings. There is a two-storey bay projection on the front and a terracotta octagonal corner turret on the right. To the left, there is a two-storey porch from the early 20th century, with the tile-hung second storey supported by two timber columns. The interior has been partly remodelled in the 20th century, including rebuilt chimney-pieces.

Valley View is part of a group of similar houses that overlook a steep-sided combe leading down to Boscastle Harbour, alongside other houses such as Lewarne, Meachard, Glenfinart, Penrowan, Belmont, and Polqueens.
