Description
St Meachard is a house built in 1887, constructed from slate stone rubble with brick dressings and a slate roof featuring hipped ends and a brick axial chimney stack. The house is situated on a steeply sloping bank, resulting in a single-storey elevation on the road side and a two-storey elevation on the lower side, which has a deep battered base. The design effectively accommodates the challenging site and offers exceptional views.
The entrance is located in the side wall, likely leading into a wide passage with a staircase against the bank on the left and two reception rooms on the lower side to the right, both heated by back-to-back fireplaces. A service room is probably located at the rear of the stair, against the bank on the left. The front elevation on the lower side features a battered base and includes a two-storey canted bay projection on the left with three 20-pane sash windows. To the right, there are two 20-pane sashes on the ground floor and a double sash on the first floor. The left-hand side elevation has a flight of stone rubble steps with iron railings leading down from the road to the entrance. The interior has not been inspected.
St Meachard is part of a group of similar houses overlooking a steep-sided combe that leads down to Boscastle Harbour, which includes Valley View, Lewarne, Glenfinart, Penrowan, Belmont, and Polqueens. The house is one of six buildings constructed in 1887 on an east-facing slope alongside New Road in Boscastle.
