Description

SW 72 SE ST. ANTHONY- IN-MENEAGE 5/195 Higher Boden Farmhouse and - adjoining walls

GV II

Farmhouse and adjoining walls. Probably C18. Painted rubble and cob walls, slate sills and oak lintels. Steep asbestos slate roofs with heightened eaves formerly thatched, cast iron ogee gutters. Brick chimneys over gable ends plus a lateral brick shaft over left hand rear wall. Irregular L-shaped plan plus service wing at right angles to middle of rear, probably all integral. The central spine is 2 rooms with entrance lobby and stair between. The right hand room with gable stack is probably the hall/kitchen and the left hand room probably an inner parlour with stack and window at the rear and with the best parlour in the wing projecting at right angles in front. The unheated rear wing built partly into the bank was probably the pantry/dairy. A further lean-to room, probably C19, adjoins at the right hand side of the kitchen. Two storeys. Regular 2 window south-east front with parlour wing projecting from left hand side. Doorway towards angle with window over 4-panel door. Kitchen window right and parlour windows to right hand (north-east) wall of wing are wider than the windows over. Circa early C19 16-pane hornless sashes. Interior not inspected. Tall rubble wall with slate coping and clay ridge tiles encloses the garden at the front. Slightly irregular plan due to circa early C19 alteration to align with right hand wall of lean-to. A granite cider crusher complete with wheel survives at the rear right hand side of the house. This house has an unusual plan but one which was designed for efficient function as a farmhouse. Interior may be of interest.
