Description
Trewhella Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the 18th century. It features rubble walls and oak lintels, except for a granite lintel above the doorway. The roof is L-shaped, thatched with wheat reed, and has a scantle slate covering over a lean-to in the angle. Brick chimneys are located at the gable ends; the right-hand chimney is mostly made of original 18th-century bricks, while the chimney over the rear gable of the kitchen wing is a half-round-on-plan tapered external rubble stack. The original layout was probably an L-shaped plan with two rooms and a cross passage, consisting of a wider hall/kitchen on the left and a parlour on the right. A one-room kitchen wing was likely added behind the right-hand room in the later 18th century, and a dairy or pantry lean-to was constructed in the rear angle during the 19th century. The exterior is two storeys high and features a nearly symmetrical three-window front facing south-south-east, with a doorway positioned to the right of the middle. The entrance has a four-panel door, and there are 20th-century two-light casement windows. Inside, there are two 18th-century bowtell-moulded beams at the location of the former cross passage, along with later features such as fat side-bead moulded beams in the kitchen. The first floor rooms and roof structures were not inspected.
