Description

Rose Cottage is a pair of adjoining houses dating from the 18th century and early 19th century. They are constructed from slurried rubble, with the left-hand house partly rendered. The roofs are covered with scantle slate and feature brick chimneys at the gable ends.

The left-hand house has one original room and a cross passage on the right, along with a later 19th-century single-storey wash house with an external gable stack on the left, and a 20th-century extension at the rear. The right-hand house is two rooms wide and deep, with a cross passage to the left of the middle, presumably leading to a parlour on the left and a kitchen/living room on the right. There is also a 20th-century remodelled lean-to on the right side.

The exterior is two storeys high with a slightly irregular four-window front facing northeast, where each house has two first-floor windows. The left-hand house features a central ground floor window in the two-storey section and a doorway on the right. It has a 19th-century panelled door with glazed top panels and possibly original nine-pane hornless sashes with high meeting rails. The wash house on the left has one window with a 20th-century casement. The right-hand house has a wide doorway to the left of the middle, with a window on either side, and a window above the doorway. It has a 19th-century four-panel door and early 19th-century nine-pane hornless sashes with high meeting rails for the first-floor openings, while the ground floor features later horned sashes. The eaves were rebuilt, possibly heightened, in the 20th century. The interiors have not been inspected.
