Description
The Mount is a small house dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of painted rubble with granite dressings on the ground floor and thinly rendered cob above. The roof is made of grouted scantle slate and features brick chimneys at the gable ends, along with cast iron ogee gutters.
The layout consists of two rooms: a kitchen on the right and a parlour on the left, with a passage between them leading to a stair in a rectangular rear turret. A partition on the left side of the passage was removed in the 20th century to enlarge the formerly very small parlour. The house is two storeys high and has a nearly symmetrical southeast front with two windows and an off-centre doorway towards the left, featuring an original ledged door. An ornate lattice porch, which incorporates classical motifs and is topped by a triangular pediment, adds character to the entrance.
The original 12-pane horizontal sash windows are present at both the front and rear of the house. Inside, most of the original carpentry and joinery, including the stairs and doors, has been retained. The Mount is part of a group of unspoiled houses located at the head of Gillan Creek, and this particular house remains virtually complete.
