Description
Carne Cottage is a pair of cottages that were converted into one house, dating from the early 19th century. The building features painted cob over stone footings, with slate sills and wooden lintels. It has a dry Delabole slate roof with brick chimneys on the gable ends, one of which is external and partly enclosed by a later lean-to addition.
The layout consists of two nearly identical single-cell houses with entrance passages that are back to back in the middle, each with a staircase at the rear. A lean-to outhouse was added in the late 19th century on the left side. The cottage is two storeys high and originally had a symmetrical south front with two windows and doorways close together in the middle. The right-hand doorway is partly blocked and features an early 19th-century window, while the left-hand doorway has an originally ledged door with a small pane inserted. All the windows are early 19th-century 12-pane horizontal sliding sashes.
Inside, the cottage retains much of its original carpentry and joinery, including the stairs and some doors. Carne Cottage is part of a group of unspoiled houses located near the head of the picturesque Gillan Creek.
