Description
Penlee is a house dating from the circa 1820s, constructed of slate rubble with granite quoins and featuring a hipped grouted scantle slate roof with brick chimneys on the side walls. The building has a double depth central stair plan with a rear wing and is two storeys tall. The south front has three windows, with a 20th-century bay window on the ground floor to the left in a widened opening, and an original sash window to the right. The windows are 12-pane wooden sashes, and there is a full-length open cast iron verandah with scroll detail, likely from the mid-19th century, now covered with a corrugated tent roof. All original window openings are slightly arched and feature granite voussoirs. The entrance door is located in the middle of the west side and has six panels, with the top four being glazed, and is topped by an original fanlight in a round arched opening. There is a cast iron porch that is similar and contemporary with the verandah. The remains of a conservatory, likely Victorian, are present on the east side, originally full length. The interior has seen little alteration and retains original stairs, doors, panelled reveals, and moulded plaster ceiling cornices.
