Description
This building is a warehouse, known as The Grain Store, occupied by Bridon Ropes Limited. It was constructed between 1860 and 1862 and is built from Killas rubble with rock-faced granite dressings. The warehouse features a pair of hipped roofs made of dry Delabole slate, which are set behind a granite-coped parapet with a stepped granite cornice. The structure has a large rectangular plan with two opposing loading bays and stands four storeys tall, displaying a front and rear façade with a pattern of 1-1-2-1-1 bays.
The original windows are three-light with horizontal glazing bars and central-opening casements, except for the 20th-century windows on the third-floor rear. There are tiered loading doorways located one bay back from either end, along with ledged doors and original swivelling iron pulley brackets. The windows are topped with segmental keyed arches, and there are two ground-floor doorways at either end, each with windows above on every floor. A small single-storey 20th-century extension is present at the rear left.
The interior retains original cross-beam and joist floor structures, while the roof structure has not been inspected. This warehouse dates back to the improvement of the docks at Falmouth, which began in 1860.
