Description

Walton House is a house that has been divided into two residences, located on Middle Street in Padstow. It dates from the early 18th century and was likely divided into two houses in the 19th century. The front wall is made of rendered, painted, and partly pebble-dashed stone rubble. The left gable end may be timber-framed and is partly slate hung. The roof is covered with slate, cement washed, and bitumen coated, featuring gable ends and a moulded eaves cornice.

Originally, the house likely had a two-room layout with a central passage, possibly including a service wing at the rear right. This rear wing was extended further in the 18th and 19th centuries, with an additional wing added to the rear left, probably in the late 19th century. The house was divided into two residences, with No. 12 on the left occupying the original left room and Walton House on the right taking the passage and right room along with the service wing at the back.

The exterior is two stories high with a regular, originally symmetrical five-window front. Although the windows were replaced in the late 19th century for Walton House on the right and in the 20th century for No. 12 on the left, they remain in their original openings, likely replacing what were originally 12-pane sashes with heavy glazing bars. Walton House features a 19th-century door and doorframe at the center of the elevation, while No. 12 has a 20th-century door in what was originally a window opening. The moulded eaves cornice adds to the building's character.

Inside Walton House, there are several 18th-century two-panel doors and an early 18th-century eight-panel door with raised and fielded panels. The interior of No. 12 has not been inspected.
