Description
The Almshouses in Padstow were built in 1870, as indicated by a datestone. They are constructed from brick laid in English bond and feature a rag slate roof with gable ends and clay ridge tiles, along with brick end and axial stacks. The layout consists of a courtyard plan with two rows of four one-room houses on the north and south sides, an office on the east side, and a brick wall with an entrance on the west, enclosing a rectangular courtyard.
The building stands two storeys high. The east elevation shows the gable ends of the north and south ranges, which flank a brick wall that has an entrance leading into the courtyard. This wall is stepped, with a central rise and features a dressed stone arch with a trefoil head. Each of the north and south ranges has two storeys, with two pointed dressed stone arches for the ground floor windows and two 4-centred arched window openings above. The deep projecting verges are adorned with barge boards. On the right-hand gable end, there is a datestone commemorating John Tredwin.
Inside the courtyard, the two rows of houses have regular four-window front elevations with gables at the front. The ground floor features plank doors, while the upper floors have 2-light casements. The office at the far east end is lower, has a gable end at the front, and includes a pointed arched opening to the porch with a 2-light casement above. This group of buildings remains particularly unspoilt.
