Description
PADSTOW NEW STREET (east side), Padstow SW 9075-9175 8/110 No. 1 (White Hart) and building adjoining on south-east
GV II
House, formerly a public house, now divided up into 3 holiday cottages. Circa early to mid C17, extended in later C17 and in early C19. Stone rubble. Bitumen coated slate roof with gable ends to main range with stone rubble and brick end stacks. Extended to left with stone rubble range with bitumen coated slate roof; hipped end to front left. Lower range to right with bitumen coated slate roof with gable ends and slate roof with half hipped ends to wing to rear right. Plan: Main range probably of 2-room and central cross or through passage plan heated by end stacks. Further extended in circa later C17 on left hand side with 2- room plan wing to rear left, forming an overall 'L' shaped plan. Extended with service range of probably one or two room plan to right in circa early C19 and with outbuilding, possibly stables for the public house, in circa mid C19. The buildings were used as a public house until at least 1911 and are now converted into at least 3 holiday cottages. Exterior: 2 storeys. Main range near centre with a symmetrical 3-window front. C19 part glazed door in C17 doorframe which has ovolo moulded frame with vase-shaped stops. Flanked by two 2-light horizontally sliding sashes with 3 C20 PVC windows on first floor. To left, C19 horizontal sliding sash on ground and first floor with 3 window left-hand side elevation of 3 storeys. To right, single storey range with 2 C19 horizontal sliding sashes. Interior: The rear left hand wing contains an early C18 plaster cornice on the first floor. The central range was not accessible at time of survey but may contain serveral interesting features as the C17 doorframe is of good quality. The rear right hand wing contains a C19 roof. The public house was advertised in the Sherborne Mercury in 1746 as an 'accustomed inn' with large malthouse and was probably the only inn in Padstow before The George and Dragon in the Market Place. Information given by Mr Douch of Royal Institution, Truro, in letter to owners.
