Graystones And Adjoining Cottage, Including Garden Walls At The Front

This is a 17th-century house, likely originally a single dwelling, which was remodelled in the 18th century. It is located in Marazion, along Fore Street. The building is constructed of granite and killas rubble with granite lintels and slate sills, and has a scantle slate roof with gable ends, topped by a brick chimney on the left-hand gable. The plan is an irregular U-shape, comprising a three-room range at the front, with service wings of one room attached to its rear, left and right. A further one-room-plan wing returns from the left-hand service wing. It may have originally been a three-room through-passage plan, extended in the 18th century. The two-story south front has five windows in total: three for the main house on the left, and two for the adjoining cottage on the right. The front of the house shows clear signs of 18th-century remodelling, particularly on the first floor. A reset 17th-century chamfered granite mullioned window head or sill is incorporated as a quoin in the left-hand corner. The house has a roughly central doorway with an old four-panel door and overlight; the cottage has a 20th-century door on its left side. The windows are early 20th-century horned sashes. The interior was not inspected. The granite rubble garden walls at the front of a tapered forecourt possibly date to the 18th century and include partly dressed granite copings, jambstones to gatepiers, and dressed granite steps. The gateways align with the building’s doorways.
