Description
The Boer War Memorial, located in Morrab Gardens, Penzance, was unveiled on 5 November 1904 and created by Pascoe and Co. It has undergone repairs and restoration in the late 20th century.
The memorial features a life-size statue of a volunteer soldier dressed in khaki, wearing a Baden-Powell hat, and leaning on the butt end of a rifle with his head bowed. This statue is made of Sicilian marble and stands on a square plinth of roughly-dressed and polished granite in a classical style. An inscription on the front of the plinth reads: "THIS MEMORIAL / IS ERECTED BY THE INHABITANTS / OF PENZANCE / TO THE MEMORY OF THE / PENZANCE MEN (WHOSE NAMES / APPEAR BELOW) WHO LOST THEIR LIVES / DURING THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR / 1899 -1902 / (NAMES)." The memorial is situated with the Morrab Library to the north-west.
