Description

The tombchest of Humphrey Iew, located 9 metres southeast of the chancel of the Church of St. Symphorian, was erected in 1718 in memory of Humphrey Iew, who died that same year. It is constructed from slate rubble and features a rectangular slate lid. The tombchest has a marginal inscription and a central rectangular panel with a verse inscribed in upper and lower case lettering with serifs. The verse reads:

Stay passenger, who ere thou be
Let this my death admonish thee
For strength and youth I was in prime
and yet cut off in the midst of time
(by accident) the boisterous sea
I to my grave was sent that way
& when death doth come to thee
Even as I am so shalt thou be.
