Description
The headstone of John Bastard, dated 1807, is located 5 metres southeast of the chancel of the Church of St Symphorian in the parish of Minster. This slate headstone features a triangular top and is inscribed with both upper and lower case serif lettering. The inscription includes a verse that reads:
Cut down as a flourishing flower
He fades; as shadow he flies;
His Beauty is gone in an hour
He blooms for a moment - and Dies
The headstone is signed by I. Calleway of Boscastle and commemorates John Bastard, the son of James and Elizabeth Pearn, who died at the age of 3.
