Description

SALTASH

993/0/10003 NEW ROAD 22-MAY-07 Burraton Milestone at NGR SX4211259431

II Mid C19 milestone of granite; rectangular in plan with rounded top. Incised lettering to south face: '1 mile To S', for one mile to Saltash.

HISTORY: This milestone is one of a series erected by the Saltash Turnpike Trust which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1761. In 1834, to improve access to the newly opened steam ferry at Saltash, the Trust constructed a new route from the ferry pier north west to South Pill and improved the existing length from there to Burraton Cross.

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: Milestones are of special interest as one of the few physical remains of national and local historic road use. They reflect the standardisation of roads and the introduction of turnpikes. This mid C19 milestone situated along a former turnpike road, the old A38, is of special interest as a physical marker of the area's changing transport history. It also has group value with other listed milestones on this route.
