Description
This mid 19th century milestone is made of granite and has a rectangular shape with a rounded top. The south face features incised lettering that reads '1 mile To S', indicating one mile to Saltash.
The milestone is part of a series erected by the Saltash Turnpike Trust, which was established by an Act of Parliament in 1761. In 1834, the Trust improved access to the newly opened steam ferry at Saltash by constructing a new route from the ferry pier northwest to South Pill and enhancing the existing road from there to Burraton Cross.
Milestones like this one are significant as they are among the few remaining physical markers of historic road use, reflecting the standardization of roads and the introduction of turnpikes. This particular milestone, located along a former turnpike road, the old A38, serves as an important marker of the area's evolving transport history and has group value with other listed milestones on this route.
