Description

The monument in Victoria Gardens, dating from around 1900, is a granite tapering pier topped with a modillion capping that supports a crown. The plinth features a bronze relief of a hero and a tablet inscribed with the words: "This monument was erected by his countrymen at home and abroad - To the memory of Major General Sir William Penn Symons KCB of Hatt who fell while commanding the British Troops at Talana Hill, Natal on 20 October 1899."
