Description
The Saltash War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1921. It is made of granite and lead and is situated to the south of the Parish Church of St Nicholas and St Faith, which is a Grade I listed building.
The memorial features a granite Celtic cross with a cusped wheel-head and a knot work design carved in relief on the west face of the cross-head and shaft. The cross shaft rises from a corniced pedestal with a moulded foot, which is set on a two-stepped base.
On the west face of the pedestal, there is an inscription that reads "TO / THE MEMORY / OF / MEN OF SALTASH / WHO FELL / IN / THE GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1918" in lead lettering. The names of the fallen soldiers are listed on the other faces of the pedestal.
The memorial is located on a paved area within a raised grassed plot in the south-west corner of the churchyard. A stone kerb, which serves as the top of a retaining wall, runs along the north and east edges of the plot. The foot of the Second World War memorial wall is set into the kerb on the east side. On the west side of the plot, a curved stone wall flanks the steps that lead from the road to the memorial. This wall is topped with iron railings that include a central gate featuring the arms of the borough.
