Description
This late 18th century milestone is made of granite and has a rectangular shape with a rounded top. The north face features incised lettering that reads 'L J', indicating that 'L' stands for Launceston and 'J' represents one mile.
The milestone is part of a series established by the Launceston Turnpike Trust, which was created in 1760 by an Act of Parliament to improve and maintain several roads leading to Launceston, including the route from Launceston Castle to Trekelland Bridge.
Milestones are significant as they are among the few remaining physical markers of both national and local road history. They illustrate the standardization of roads and the introduction of turnpikes. This particular milestone, located along the former turnpike road now known as the B3254, serves as an important marker of the area's evolving transport history and has group value with other listed milestones along this route.
