Description

Nos. 13 and 15, along with the attached steps and forecourt walls, are a pair of cottages likely built as a toll house in the early 19th century. The buildings feature stucco on what is probably rubble for Nos. 13 and 15, while No. 34 Westgate Street has rubble and rendered cob, with slate hanging on the canted end and a rag slate roof that has a polygonal end on the right. There is a brick axial stack and a rendered stack on the left. The design follows a double-depth back-to-back plan and includes Gothic style details.

The cottages are two storeys high and have a three-window range. They originally featured 16-pane, 2-light casements with 4-centred-arched lights. The left side has a symmetrical two-window front with a central pair of doorways that have 4-panel doors, set within a three-bay open wooden porch that has arched bays and a rag slate roof. There is a blind window between the windows and to the bay on the right. The right-hand return has a one-window canted bay with what is likely the original window above a 20th-century copy.

No. 34 Westgate Street, located at the rear, has an overall four-window range, with an old 4-panel door on the left and a central 20th-century door in the three-window range on the right. The interior has not been inspected. The property features steps leading up to the porch, which are linked to a high rubble forecourt wall that runs parallel to the front and has a canted end on the right.
