Description
This mid-19th century milestone is made of granite and has a rectangular shape with a rounded top. The dressed south face is carved at an angle to slope backwards and features incised lettering that reads "C. 1 / T. 8½". Below the lettering, there is an Ordnance Survey benchmark.
Historically, this milestone is part of a series erected by the Callington Turnpike Trust along the route between Callington and Tavistock. It is a clear example of a mid-19th century milestone, reflecting the expansion of the road network following the 1773 general Turnpike Act, which mandated the recording of mileage. The milestone also holds group value with other milestones placed along this route by the same trust.
