Description
This is a granite milestone dating from around 1764, located 400 meters south of Rill Farm on St Germans Road in Callington. It is a rectangular ashlar post with a rounded head, featuring incised lettering with serifs that indicates the distance to Callington in Roman numerals: C I.
The milestone is part of a series established by the Callington Turnpike Trust, which was created by an Act of Parliament in 1764. The Act outlined eight routes, including this one leading to Callington from St Germans, which originally had three milestones.
Milestones are significant as they are among the few remaining physical markers of historical road use, reflecting the standardization of roads and the establishment of turnpikes. This particular milestone is intact and remains in its original location, and it has group value with other listed mileposts along this route.
