Description
No. 9 Fore Street is a commercial building, currently housing a building society and solicitors' offices, dating from around the 1870s. The exterior is made of stuccoed rubblestone with an incised, rusticated ground floor. It features a steeply pitched slate roof with gable ends and pierced, crested ridge tiles. The building has two storeys and an asymmetrical front with four windows.
On the ground floor, there is a panelled door to the left with a plain fanlight above it. To the left of the central entrance is a sash window, and to the right are two more sash windows, all without glazing bars. The glass is engraved for the business of R. Hancock and Son, Solicitors. The central entrance has a four-panelled door with a plain fanlight above and an ornate free-style stuccoed hood, which is corbelled out on incised brackets and has a moulded cornice that continues as a string course over the ground floor. This is topped with a scroll pediment flanked by ball finials.
Above the entrance, there are four asymmetrically placed sash windows, also without glazing bars and featuring ornamental aprons below. The windows are set within segmented arches, and a string course continues at the impost level, with keys that extend into the moulded cornice. The facade is complete with its original glazing and door, representing its period well. The interior has not been inspected.
