Description
Rose Cottage is a house dating from the late 18th century. It features painted rubble and cob walls, with a steep asbestos slate roof that was formerly thatched, and a brick chimney located over the left-hand gable end. The layout consists of a two-room plan, with a larger room on the left that was originally the kitchen and living area, providing access to an external stair turret at the rear middle, which is built into the hillside. The smaller room on the right serves as the parlour. There is a small 20th-century addition behind the parlour.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window front facing southeast, and a central doorway with a 20th-century ledged door. The original windows are 12-pane, 2-light casements that retain some original crown glass, including bull's-eye panes. Inside, the cottage has retained much of its original carpentry and joinery, featuring softwood plank and muntin partitions, as well as moulded ceiling beams. The roof structure, which was not inspected, is believed to be original. The stairs were renewed in the 20th century.
