Description

The milestone located about 15 meters south-east of Pear Tree Cottage in St Michael Penkevil is a Grade II listed structure. This stone milestone stands on the north side of the road and is painted white, with the inscription highlighted in black. It measures 0.85 meters in height and 0.43 meters in width, featuring a rectangular shape that narrows to an arched top. The lettering is in sans-serif capitals and is carved somewhat inexpertly, reading: 'FROM / TREGOTHNAN / 1 / MILE'.

This milestone is part of a set of four that were privately erected to mark the approach to Tregothnan House from the north-east. These milestones are believed to date from the early part of the 19th century, possibly around 1818, coinciding with the remodeling of Tregothnan House for the fourth Viscount Falmouth by architect William Wilkins. They are situated on a public, unclassified road that leads south from what is now the A390 at Trelowthas, rather than on the private drive to the house.

The milestone is designated at Grade II for its historic interest as part of a group marking the route to a significant private estate, its intact condition as a complete example of an early 19th-century milestone in its original location, and its group value with the Grade I listed Tregothnan House and the other milestones in the group, which are also listed.
