Description

The milestone located approximately 125 meters north of Tregerrick Cottage in St Michael Penkevil is a Grade II listed structure. This stone milestone is painted white, with black lettering that reads: 'FROM / TREGOTHNAN / 3 / MILES'. It stands 0.85 meters high and 0.43 meters wide, featuring a rectangular shape that narrows to an arched top. The lettering is carved in a sans-serif capital style, though it is not expertly done.

Historically, this milestone is one of a set of four that were privately erected to indicate the approach to Tregothnan House from the northeast. These milestones are believed to date from the early part of the 19th century, possibly around 1818, when Tregothnan House was remodeled for the fourth Viscount Falmouth by architect William Wilkins. Notably, these milestones are positioned along a public, unclassified road that leads southward from the A390 at Trelowthas, rather than on the private drive to the house.

The milestone is designated for its historic interest as part of a group marking the route to a significant private estate. It remains intact as a complete example of an early 19th-century milestone, standing in its original location. Additionally, it has group value with the Grade I listed Tregothnan House and the other three listed milestones in the set.
