Description
St Michael Penkivel School includes two earth closet buildings, a boundary wall, and railings, dating from around 1888. The buildings are constructed from slatestone rubble with granite dressings and feature a Delabole slate roof with shaped ridge tiles and gable ends. The design is in the Tudor style, with a cruciform plan made up of two schoolrooms and a small room in each wing. The structure is single storey with a basement beneath the east wing.
The south entrance faces the road and features a prominent central gable end of the schoolroom, which includes a three-light granite mullioned window with a transom and original wooden sashes with glazing bars and tilting vents. There is a granite hoodmould above the window, a cruciform ventilator, and projecting verge and eaves. A granite coped plinth runs throughout the building. The left gable has separate entrances for girls and boys. The ground slopes down to the right, allowing for a low basement with a flat-headed doorway.
The wings are identical above the basement level, each featuring an arched doorway at the angle and adjoining three-light mullioned windows with original wooden sashes, each with four panes and slit ventilators above. An open, central octagonal bellcote with moulded eaves sits beneath an ogee-shaped lead roof topped with a weather vane. The interior includes a moulded arch-braced roof structure with moulded purlins.
Additionally, there are contemporary detached rubble and granite earth closet buildings for girls and boys, both with steep pitched Delabole slate roofs, with the boys' closet including a urinal wing. The original rubble boundary walls feature granite dressings and are accompanied by contemporary iron railings and gates on the south side. The school, earth closet buildings, and boundary walls together create a cohesive group.
