Description
Luckett Hill Cottage consists of two miners' cottages built in the early 19th century, currently vacant as of June 1992. The cottages are constructed from coursed slatestone rubble, with rag slate and corrugated iron roofs, and each cottage has a stone stack at the left end. The cottage on the right is two stories with a one-room plan and has remnants of a service building at the rear. The cottage on the left is a single story with a two-room plan, featuring a central entry and a lean-to on the left side.
The front of the building, facing the road, has flat stone arches over a 19th-century six-panelled door and flanking horned 8/8-pane sash windows for the left cottage, while the lean-to has a plank door. The right cottage has similar arches over a 19th-century plank door and a boarded window, with a timber lintel above a first-floor 6/6-pane sash window. Inside, there is an early 19th-century fireplace with a cast-iron range on the left, 19th-century panelled doors, and an open fireplace on the right.
This building is a significant surviving example of miners' cottages associated with the nearby mines at Luckett, which closed in 1879 and were involved in the extraction of arsenic, copper, tin, and gold.
