Description

Collacombe Cottages are a pair of houses built in the early 19th century, with some later alterations and additions. They are constructed of rubble, whitewashed in parts, and partly rendered, featuring a slate and bitumen roof with weathered ridge and gable stacks made of brick. Each cottage has a two-room plan with a central entrance and a single depth range, including gable end stacks and ridge stacks to heat all rooms.

The cottage on the left has a gabled porch with a six-pane front light and a side door, along with a two-light casement window of ten panes each with a cambered head to the left, and a similar casement under the eaves to the right. The cottage on the right has a door with a glazed panel and a two-light casement window of eight panes each with a cambered head, plus two similar casements under the eaves. There is a straight joint to the right leading to a later 19th-century addition with a ridge stack at the former gable end. This addition includes a former stable entry to the right with a two-light casement inserted, a 16-pane sash window under the eaves, and a corrugated iron lean-to attached to the right.

The right return is faced in corrugated iron and features a large external flue, with the stack removed above the gable end. The left return has a rendered gable end. At the rear, there are three windows on the right; the ground floor has two two-light casements of ten panes each with a small single light between, and the first floor has a similar casement to the left, a replaced plate glass casement to the right, and a central nine-pane casement, all faced in corrugated iron. There is a single-storey outhouse attached to the rear left, with the rear wall of the main house faced in slate above the outhouse. To the left, there is a two-light four-pane casement at ground floor and a blocked opening at first floor, with the rear of the house to the left also faced in corrugated iron. The interior has not been inspected. The cottages were originally built as part of the Devon Mine.
