Description
Higher Penjerrick is a cottage ornée, built around the middle of the 19th century as a guest cottage for the former Penjerrick house, and now used as a private residence. It was constructed for the Fox family. The building is characterised by painted rubble walls with granite sills and an asbestos slate hipped roof, which was originally thatched. It follows a T-shaped plan, with two reception rooms at the front, and a stair hall in a small wing set at a right angle behind the central section. An original kitchen is located in the basement beneath the reception rooms. The design incorporates Gothic style features.
The building has a single storey over a basement, with an attic above. The exterior remains largely unaltered, although some of the glazing bars and the majority of the glass in the windows have been replaced in the 20th century. The front (east) elevation is symmetrical, with two windows and no doorway. It features two-centred arched windows with corbelled rubble arches, and three-light windows with Perpendicular style tracery and Y tracery. Dormer windows were added in the 20th century. The right-hand (north-north-east) front has a window on the left and a doorway on the right. The original arched planked door, fixed within its original moulded frame and secured with wooden nails arranged in a pattern, remains. One original window on the left-hand side retains some original coloured leaded glass within its tracery.
Inside, the interior is simple. An original wooden Gothic style screen with pointed-arched panelled double doors divides the two principal rooms. Shutters with beaded panels are located in the window near the doorway. The basement and attic have not been inspected.
