Description
No 36, Foulden is a cottage that dates back to the 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid to late 19th century. This asymmetrical, single-storey building with an attic features four bays and is part of a terrace. The front is constructed of heavily-pointed rubble at the ground level, while cream brick is used for the raised eaves. The dormers are also brick-built, and the rear is whitewashed rubble. Notable architectural details include a mutuled string course and a corbelled brick eaves course, along with sandstone quoins and long and short surrounds to the openings.
On the southwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a part-glazed timber gothic panelled door that is offset to the right of centre, accompanied by a timber-bracketed pentice canopy. Above this, a piended dormer breaks the eaves. To the outer right, there is a single window at ground level, while a tripartite window is offset to the left of centre. There is a full-height, hipped projection to the outer left that features a bipartite window at ground level, with a scroll-bracketed sandstone canopy above it, and a projecting tripartite window that breaks the eaves above.
The northeast elevation, or rear, has a single window centered at ground level, a small window in the subsequent bay to the left, and a door in the bay to the outer left.
The cottage predominantly features 6-pane glazing in its timber windows. The roof is steeply pitched and covered with red tiles, displaying fishscale banding at the front and a plain finish at the rear, with skews. Brick-built apex stacks with circular cans are present.
The interior was not seen in 1999. In front of the cottage, there is a cobbled walkway made of horonised whin-chip, which forms part of a continuous stretch.
