Description

The well house dedicated to St Mary is located 250 meters east of Newton Ferrers House and dates from around the 15th century. It is constructed from granite and stone rubble, built into the slope to enclose a field spring. The well house features a granite two-centred arch, with an outer arch that has a slight ogee cusp at the apex. Water flows through the well house beneath the threshold and down to join the stream below. Inside, there is a circular bowl suspended by an iron bracket, with carved and incised sides. The lips of the bowl are marked with the date 1666 and the initial M.
