Description

No. 3 Southgate Place, which includes No. 2 Angel Hill, is a town house dating from the mid to late 18th century, or possibly a remodelling of an older house. It features slate hanging on a timber frame and has a fairly steep dry Delabole slate hipped roof, topped with late 19th-century crested clay ridge tiles and a central hipped roof dormer that is boarded over. There is a rear lateral stack. The building has a shallow double-depth plan with a shallow outshut and stands two storeys plus an attic over a basement, with a two-window range.

The original windows are 12-pane hornless sashes with thick glazing bars, and there is a paired sash on the left. The ground floor has a late 19th-century four-light double shop front, with original slender turned mullions that have carved bases and caps on the window to the right. The shop front features canted end lights, a pair of central glazed doors, and a house doorway at the far right, which has a later flush panelled door and overlight. The stall riser is made of granite ashlar, and there is a full-width moulded entablature with a sloping fascia.

The left-hand return is incised stucco and has a 18th-century horizontal-sliding sash above a 18th-century twelve-pane sash on the left, along with two basement openings—one boarded over and one secured with iron bars. No. 2 Angel Hill is partly boarded up, obscuring old windows and doors. The interior of No. 3 has an original fireplace structure on the ground floor, but the first floor was not inspected.
