Description
No. 8 and No. 12 Southgate Place is a late 19th-century corner shop with accommodation, now functioning as two separate shops. The building features stucco on rubble and has a rag slate roof that is hipped at the corner, with brick stacks at each end. It has a double-depth corner site plan with a splayed corner and stands three storeys high. The main street facade has a five-window range, while the right-hand return has a three-window range.
The second floor and the ground floor on the far right have segmental arches, all containing what are likely original four-pane horned sash windows. The large original corner shop showcases slender turned mullions, some two-pane horned sashes, and a moulded entablature with a fascia. The doorway is located towards the left of the main shop frontage and on the right of the return, with a house doorway to the right that features a three-pane overlight and an original door with two tall round-arched panels. To the left of the original shop, there is a later double shop front. The interior of the original shop retains many old or original fittings, although it has not been fully inspected. The building is included for its group value.
