Description
No. 2 Southgate Street is a town house with a later shop, likely built in the early 18th century. The exterior features painted slate hanging on a timber frame, with a pseudo jetty between the upper floors created by a moulded cornice. It has a steep dry Delabole slate roof with a moulded cornice under the projecting front eaves, a rendered stack on the right, and a cast-iron ogee gutter. The building probably has a double-depth plan and stands three storeys high with a two-window range. The windows are 12-pane hornless sashes from the 20th or 19th century, set within moulded wooden architraves. The ground floor includes a late 20th-century shop front on the left, while an older, likely late 19th-century moulded entablature is hidden by a modern fascia but is visible above the doorway on the right, which features an overlight and a mid-20th-century six-panel door. The interior has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest.
