Description
No. 8, Southgate Street is a large town house dating from the mid-18th century. It is part of a wider group of buildings of group value with No. 6 Southgate Street. The house is constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a decorative band between the upper floors and flat arches. The roof is covered in asbestos slate, with a hip on the left side, and features a moulded cornice under a projecting front eaves cornice.
The house has a deep plan including a rear wing at a right angle on the left, and a passage that formerly served as the central doorway for the entire building, positioned on the right. The house is arranged over three storeys and has a three-window front, with the right-hand bay (originally central) projecting forward. The upper floors feature late 19th-century two-pane sash windows.
The ground floor has a large, mid-20th-century shop front with arched lights and a full-width hipped lean-to roof supported by wooden brackets. A house doorway is on the left, and a carriage doorway is on the right, with a visible timber frame partition to its right. The rear of the building has been converted into shops and incorporates vaulted cellars. Located at the rear of the passage is a reset 15th-century traceried wooden window in a Perpendicular style. The interior of the house has not been inspected but is expected to be of interest.
