Description
No. 6 Southgate Street is a town house with later shops, originally part of No. 8, dating from the mid-18th century. The building features stucco over original brick, with a band between the upper floors and quoin strips. It has a steep asbestos slate roof that is hipped on the right, complemented by a moulded cornice under projecting eaves and cast-iron ogee gutters. The plan includes a deep rear wing at right angles. The house stands three storeys tall and has a two-window range.
On the second floor, there are mid-19th century twelve-pane hornless sash windows, while the first floor has a horned sash window on the right and a large mid-19th century canted bay with hornless sashes and glazing bars, featuring a tripartite sash at the front and twelve-pane sashes on the returns. The ground floor has a lean-to projecting mid-20th century double shop front with a splayed central doorway. The rear, which is slate-hung, includes sashes with glazing bars, including a round-arched stair sash. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
