Description
The Marine Aquarium is a house with a shop that is now used as an aquarium. It dates from the 18th century or early 19th century. The front features slate hanging on studwork, while the rest is rendered over rubble. The roof is an irregular grouted scantle slate with a brick chimney on the right-hand gable end. It has cast iron ogee gutters.
The building has an irregular plan that is cranked at the rear, originally consisting of two irregularly shaped rooms: a shop on the left, which has a single-storey 20th-century extension behind it, and a house on the right, which includes a gable end fireplace and likely a shallow service room at the back.
The exterior stands at two storeys with a slightly irregular four-window front facing northwest. There is a 19th-century double shopfront on the left, with each shop window containing 12 panes at the front and three-paned sidelights. The central doorway of the shopfront has a 20th-century door and a blind overlight, and the shopfront extends above the first floor level. To the right of the shopfront, there is another doorway with a 20th-century door and overlight. The windows are four-pane horned sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
